Mix and Match Block Collection
I love In-the-Hoop Blocks — they guarantee that every finished block is perfectly sized, and with our handy joining guides stitched on the back, it’s easy to join them together with accuracy and confidence.
Lately I’ve been exploring how In-the-Hoop Blocks can be used to create backgrounds for my Large Appliqué designs, I like starting with a pre-quilted background quilt. and that’s how this brand-new Mix and Match Block Collection came to life.
One Design Set – Endless Possibilities
Unleash your creativity with this versatile set of 9 beautiful blocks, all made using the stitch-and-flip method completely in the hoop — quilting included!
With six hoop sizes to choose from, you can mix and match your blocks to create:
-
✨ Stunning background quilts
-
👜 Stylish bags and totes
-
🛋️ Cushions and table runners (with optional lace embellishments)
-
☕ Quick and easy coasters
In the step-by-step instructions, I’ll show you how to add lace for truly unique cushions and runners. And because I know you love flexibility, I’ve also included coaster files so you can turn any block into a charming single coaster.
Keep your layout completely random (like my cream tone-on-tone quilt), or play with colour and pattern for a perfectly coordinated look — the choice is yours!
🧵 Block or Coaster — Your Choice
For maximum versatility, each design includes two versions: a BLOCK file and a COASTER file.
Both stitch exactly the same way, with one key difference:
-
The Coaster file includes an extra final step to add your backing fabric.
-
This last outline is slightly smaller than the block itself, so the construction stitching is hidden when the coaster is turned — giving you a neat, professional finish.
👉 Whether you’re building a quilt, making a tote, or whipping up quick gifts, this collection is designed to help you mix, match, and create projects that are completely your own.
FINISHED SIZE - PER BLOCK
VIDEO
In this video, I’ll show you how I stitch Block 8 from our Mix & Match Quilt Block Set, and how to:
✅ Add a coaster backing for a neat, reversible finish
✅ Embellish the block with lace for extra detail
✅ Use a Solvy topper to keep the lace from catching under the presser foot
👉 The techniques shown here aren’t just for Block 8 — you can use them on any of the 9 blocks (and their coaster versions) to add backing and embellishments in your own creative way.
INSPIRATION
The option truly are limitless with these blocks – while testing, I’ve created a few samples
🌸 Lace Cushion
This cushion uses all 9 blocks, stitched with 3 fabrics and a few small lace scraps for embellishment. I didn’t pre-plan the placement — I simply arranged the blocks in a way that looked pleasing, and the lace added a beautiful touch of texture
Batik Runner
This sample uses 3 batik fabrics. I stitched them together as a table runner, but before final assembly I played around with the placement options — the possibilities really are endless! Even with just a few fabrics, you can create completely different looks depending on how you arrange the blocks.
Background Quilt Tops
🌈 Rainbow Quilt
For this quilt, I focused on Block 6 and repeated it throughout. By carefully choosing fabric colors, I was able to create a striking rainbow pattern. It’s a perfect example of how repeating a single block can still give you a bold, dynamic quilt.
Mix and Match Block Challenge
My tone-on-tone quilt is hands-down my favourite sample from this collection — and I’ve dubbed it the Mix and Match Block Challenge.
I started with a set of 10-inch cream-on-cream charm squares, knowing I wanted to make a soft, elegant background quilt. Instead of overthinking fabric placement (worrying if two fabrics were too similar or too contrasting), I decided to just stitch the blocks in order, using the fabrics exactly as they came. No second guessing, no swapping pieces around — just stitch and go!
The result? A beautifully random quilt that looks effortless and cohesive, and saved me hours of decision-making. I’m continuing to add more blocks the same way, and I absolutely love the effect.
