Thanks, Lorraine for some well-described tips to save WSS. I've used a variety of tapes over a hole before & sometimes the tape gets caught into the next design, so I'd recommend wide WSS tape to patch your WSS -- that way it won't matter.
If your machine allows you to position your design, you can move the 1st design (& subsequent designs) away from the center, which will conserve even more. I use a fresh piece of WSS or TA underneath (hooped if you like), so there are no edges to get caught & a piece of scrap as you described to float. Moving the design around gives you room to stitch out multiple corners of napkins, coasters, etc - all in one hooping.
